Day #11 – Biarritz – Close Your Eyes, Listen to the Waves, Stare at the Lighthouse

I had never been to Biarritz before and didn’t have a clear idea of what to expect—except that it was probably a fancy vacation spot.

Driving along the coast in my VW bus, I find the most beautiful parking spot of my journey so far. Parking is an adventure in itself on this trip, but in France, you can often park for free overnight. From 9 AM onwards, though, you’d better pay up—every city seems to agree on that.

The view of the ocean is breathtaking. A small bridge leads to a tiny, tree-covered platform jutting out into the sea, like a green oasis in the middle of the waves.

An Evening with Basques and Stones

My companion and I head to a bar and end up in a charming little dive behind the old town. We quickly strike up a conversation with three locals—proud Basques speaking a dialect that’s hard to understand. Still, they warmly invite us to try a local white peach liqueur.

A hippie tells us that the people here have a special connection to stones. I find that fascinating. Over the years, I’ve developed a deep connection to trees myself. It’s beautiful to see that, in some places, people still have a strong bond with nature.

Music in the Morning Sun

The next morning, the weather is perfect, so I decide to play my set right in front of the market hall. The sun is shining, a fountain gently splashes in the background, and the espresso here costs just €1.40—but tastes like it should be €4.

The town feels peaceful. It’s off-season, and the locals have the place to themselves. I wonder how my music will be received. My goal isn’t to disturb the quiet but to complement it with sound.

It turns out to be my most beautiful performance on this trip so far. And as if that weren’t enough, the three Basques from last night’s bar show up as well.

Conclusion: Biarritz is Good for the Soul

If everything feels like too much, if you’re burnt out or lacking inspiration—go to Biarritz. Close your eyes, listen to the waves, or stare at the lighthouse. Best done in the evening from that little platform.

Must-try recommendations:

Patxaran – the local liqueur on ice

Gâteau Basque – ideally once or twice a day for the sake of your soul

Biarritz in the off-season? Highly recommended.
